Book Size Templates

For MsWord

A good way to start your manuscript is to use a template for the trim size (book size) you are aiming for. This way you can approximate how the text will look in that size, and at the same time, you can approximate the number of pages.

Simply select the trim size of your book from the list below and download the template.

Open the file and follow the instructions below

General Instructions

  • Replace the items in the square brackets [ ] with information of your own.
  • Delete whole sections that you don't need.
  • If you want to add a new section, it is best to copy an entire section (from the chapter title to the end of the chapter) and paste it on a new page. This way MsWord will be able to pick up the titles for the table of contents.
  • If you want to change the styling, it is best to modify the style from the stylesheet so changes affect the entire document.
  • When you are done, you need to update the table of contents. Go to the table of contents page and right-click anywhere there is text with page numbers. Then from the editing dialogue box that opens, select UPDATE FIELD.

On the new dialogue box that opens, select UPDATE ENTIRE TABLE.

You may have to do some minor formatting. First, be sure to remove the TABLE OF CONTENTS entry.

Lastly, you may need to change where the page numbers appear. Select the entire table of contents, and then on the ruler (make sure your ruler is on) drag the tab mark to the left until you are comfortable with the location. The tab mark looks like an inverted-L.

Book Cover Templates

Resources from the web

Generally, there is no one-size-fits-all template for cover design because we cannot tell what particular trim size a book will be. More importantly, the width of the spine is also needed for a cover that wraps the entire front and back. The spine of a book will depend on two things: the first is the paper stock (which has different thicknesses), and the number of pages of the final formatted manuscript.

The only exact cover template we can provide is the one for a Kindle book. The dimensions are 1600 x 2560px. It must have at least a resolution of 300ppi (points per inch, or sometimes dpi, which is dots per inch.)

The following are websites, we recommend, which offer free book cover design templates.
